First beers of the 2015 Beer Festival Revealed

There’s a Beer Festival Brewing at Lewes Football Club next Friday…

The first beers of the 5th Lewes Beer Festival have been revealed, and this year there are some very special ales on the menu, including an exclusive Harvey’s creation, and one dedicated to The Mighty Rooks…

Over 20 Ales & ciders will be on offer at the festival, held in the Rook Inn at the Dripping Pan on Friday, January 30 from 5pm.

First up is brewed by Harveys, and created as a tribute to one of the UK’s – and Sussex’s – finest folk singers, Bob Copper.

In his lifetime, Bob Copper (1915-2004) was responsible for collecting and recording many local folk songs, not only preserving the tunes and lyrics but ensuring that the style in which they were sung remained true to his forefathers.  He was a leading member of the famous singing Copper family of Rottingdean, East Sussex, and an important collector of English folksongs.

Bob Copper

Harvey’s Brewery have brewed an ale in tribute to the centenary of Bob’s birth, in a limited edition batch of just 20 kegs.  Lewes FC would like to thank Miles Jenner and the team at Harveys for allowing us to acquire a keg, and Bob Copper ale (6%) will be available at the festival.

Some of the best beers currently brewed in Sussex have been gathered together, including two from the Dark Star Brewery, based in Partridge Green. The Brewery, born in 1994 in the cellar of The Evening Star Pub in Brighton, offer this year’s Hophead (3.8%), which celebrates a great new tropical tasting hop from Victoria in Australia – Vic Secret, producing a zesty blend to one of the company’s most popular beers.

The other entry is Revelation (5.7%), a magnificent blend of Centennial, Liberty, Cascade, and Citra aroma hops that is highly drinkable and sure to be one of the stars of the show…

Firle’s Burning Sky Brewery have two entries this year; Plateau (3.5%) is full of flavour; zesty, refreshing & low in alcohol, this beer will have you returning to the bar for another, and Arise (4.4%) is a superb session IPA that’s perfect for the end of the day (or even the start!).

Horsham’s Kissingate Brewery have re-named their classic ‘6 Crows’ ale, to 6 Rooks, with a re-designed pump clip, specially created for the festival. It’s a rich, dark and decadent stout with intense notes of molasses, bourbon, oak and woodsmoke and at 6.6% abv it packs a punch! This fine ale won first place at The Twickenham Beer Festival 2013 and 2014, and was Gold medal winner and Champion Beer of Britain London & South East Region 2013.

Other Kissingate entries include Sussex, (4%) A glorious chestnut beer with simple roasted malt notes, and Stout Extreme (6%) with its Intense liquorice, coffee and molasses flavours.

The last to be revealed (The full list – including some superb ciders – will be available next week) is from the Baseline Brewing Company, based in the village of Small Dole in West Sussex. The company produce unfiltered natural beers made with no additives, creating a clearer, better tasting beer. We have two entries this year; Dark Matter (5.5%) A dark, full bodied Ale with similarities to the classic Riggwelter from Black Sheep, and a new British Golden Ale, Gold Admiral (4.9%), combining First Gold and Admiral Hops from Sussex and Sussex Chalk Filtered water. A classic EPA.

There will be pub grub served all night courtesy of Club caterers CIRCA, and a raffle to support the Lewes FC Supporters Club, with some superb prizes on offer.

Tickets are just £5 and available on the night. However, you can reserve your tickets by e-mailing; party@lewesfc.com, or by phone on; 01273 470820.

One of the highlights of the Lewes FC social calendar, the 5th Lewes FC Beer Festival is shaping up to be one the best ever, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Dripping Pan for some fine ales.

NOTE: The Festival will continue from 12pm on Saturday, January 31, as the Rooks entertain East Thurrock United in the Ryman Premier League, kick off 3pm. Tickets are £11 adults, £6 concessions, kids under 16 go free, and the Rook Inn will be showing the LIVE BT Sport match (kick-off 12:45pm) between Hull City and Newcastle United.
