NEW fun football fitness sessions

Here’s a really fun way to get/keep fit in 2016 – football fitness sessions for people of little or no (current) footballing ability

Every football fan has heard of the FA’s ‘Fit & Proper’ test, which is supposed to prevent unsavoury people from being allowed to take over a football club. At Lewes FC, it’s the fans who own their own club, not big business.

However, the Rooks are introducing their own Fit & Proper ‘test’. But we’re talking about getting you feeling fit.

Womens session image onlyThe Lewes FC Community Team has created a programme to focus on people’s physical well-being: The new ‘Fit & Proper’ scheme will use football to help fans and local people become fitter via fun football sessions on the club’s Rookery 3G pitch. And, later in the year, the programme will then extend into good-eating advice and cooking workshops for the culinarily-challenged.

Commenting for the club, Community Development Manager Adam Wolecki said: “Not everyone can move like Messi, but almost anyone can kick a ball. And we are not worried about who ate all the pies, so long as the pies include some healthy options too.”

Fit & Proper launches on Sunday January 10th when the club will start running weekly football fitness sessions aimed at people of ‘little or no football ability’.

The session for women will run 4-5pm every Sunday on The Rookery 3G all-weather pitch adjacent to the club immediately followed by a men’s session from 5-6pm. The usual price will be £5 per session (£3 for unwaged) but the first sessions on January 10th are FREE.

No booking is required, just turn up, play and feel better.

Enquiries should be sent to 3G@lewesfc.com or phone Adam at Lewes FC on 01273 470 820.

Bands have very occasionally appeared on football shirts before but never previously with this kind of deal… thanks to the generosity of our new kit manufacturers hummel and suppliers Premier Sports, a much larger than usual proportion of the retail price will go to our football club. So every shirt that gets sold will make a big difference to us.

Lewes FC is one of only a handful of clubs in the UK that are 100% owned by their fans and the local community. We are a not-for-profit operation so every penny we earn goes back into the club and local projects. And every shirt we sell is another thumbs-up to the grassroots, democratic ownership of football clubs everywhere.

We are grateful to Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook for giving the club their support:

Lewes FC’s new 3G open for business…

The Rookery RED3G daytime1

They think it’s all over.

It is now.

The Rookery 3G is open for bookings, right now.

2015-06-18 22.07.06This is a facility for the whole Lewes district to use. Situated adjacent to Lewes’ home ground The Dripping Pan, two minutes walk from Lewes Station, The Rookery is there for everyone. It’s been purpose-built to accommodate football (obviously), be that adult 11-a-side all the way through to kids’ 5-a-side. But thanks to a layer of IRB-approved shock pads, The Rookery is also great for adult rugby practice and youth rugby games (yes, we’ve got rugby posts available too). In addition, we are partnering with Sussex County Cricket Club and local clubs to offer youth cricket training – more details to follow.

We expect demand to be very high so if you are interested in how to book, please contact us at 3G@LewesFC.com. There will be an easy online booking system too which will launch shortly

And if you’re interested in entering a team in our Rookery Sixes League, send us an email too. We think there will only be room for somewhere between 8 and 12 teams so contact us soon if you want to find out more. One of the Leagues is for ‘SuperVets’ (40+).

What Boots Can I And Can’t I Wear?

3G boots guide

Trainers can flatten the artificial grass over time. Metal studs can rip the surface. Blades can get caught and injure you.

All footwear must be clean before going on to the 3G pitch – boot brushes are placed next to every pitch gate.

Though schemes like this run elsewhere in the UK, the idea to run something locally was the brainchild of Lewes fan and turnstile-volunteer Sean Macleod. Sean started volunteering for the Rooks to help boost his own mental well-being and it gave him a real lift. So much so that he is now working for the national mental health charity Together (in Newhaven).

Sean Macleod (Lewes FC) & Jo Benson (Together) show off the new kit.

There are always qualified coaches on hand but the idea is for people of any ability to get some welcome exercise, play a match and meet other people all at the same time. These sessions are being backed by the mental health charity Together, East Sussex County Council, Sussex County FA and Sportivate all of whom are united around a strategy to bring very practical help to people with mental health challenges and highlight just how common and ‘normal’ mental health issues are.

Speaking for Together, Jo Benson (Newhaven-based Support Worker) added: “Together was formed in 1879 so we’ve been working with people affected by mental health issues for quite some time. We know that exercise and socializing really raise people’s spirits and help them feel so much better – initiatives like this one are great news.”
