Following on from the news about Charlie Coppola’s call up for England Colleges Under19s, we received a very special email this week from the Bermudan Football Association asking us to release Jonte Smith for international duty. Jonte has been selected for the Bermudan squad to take part in the first stages of qualifying for the 2017 Caribbean Cup. Bermuda are due to play Cuba and French Guiana in Cuba in a three-team group. The winner of that group will progress to the second round due to be played in May 2016. If Bermuda make it through the second round stage then they face a further round later in the year to determine who will compete for the Caribbean Cup to be played in the USA, the semi-finalists of which will qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup to be played in July 2017.
It’s certainly a long road to the finals but one that Jonte will certainly relish after making his debut for his home nation last summer. Unfortunately, Jonte will miss our games away to Brentwood Town, home to Wingate & Finchley and potentially the Easter Monday trip to Merstham.
It’s a great honour for Jonte and everyone at the club wishes him well and safe travels.
